Your Questions About Credit Reports And Employment

Nancy asks…

How long will chapter 7 stay on public records?

I filed chapter 7 back in June 1996, just checked my credit reports 2 months ago and is gone. Will Employment background check now shows my past bankruptcy at all.

John answers:

OK, time to correct the bad answers again.

Bankruptcies are reported on your credit report for 10 years. After that they are deleted.

Bankruptcies are PUBLIC records available for everyone to see if they simply go to the court and request it. They are NOT deleted. But since the person searching the info has to pay a fee to get them, they may not want to bother. In your case, if your employer wants to check you out that carefully, they will find your BK records.

Personally, I would not want to work for someone who thinks a 10-year-old bankruptcy is a deal breaker.

Robert asks…

If an apartment is doing an employment verification, does that mean i am approved for the apartment?

I have applied for an apartment with not so good credit which i was upfront with the landlord. Seems like i have passed that part because she asked me a few questions about some things that displayed on my credit report. Right now they are doing an employment verification. If everything checks out on my employment verification, which it will because i was truthful, does that mean i am approved for the apartment? Thanks for your answers in advance.

John answers:

I do employment verification, criminal background check, and rental history check. If you’re okay on all of those, you’re likely to be approved.

Jenny asks…

I am a web designer how do I report my earnings so it shows me as employed on my credit report?

I checked my free annual credit report and it is showing me like I have never been employed. Even though I have been designing websites and I make good money with my services. How do I report the jobs I am getting so that it shows me as employed? And what information do I need to provide?

John answers:

Usually when you apply for credit and put down self employed on the application or if you update your employment status with your current creditors, they will update the info to the CRA’s.

You can also send a letter to the CRA’s yourself and request that they update your employment status in the personal section on your reports.

John answers:

No it doesn’t, but since they already performed a credit check, even if it wasn’t stellar, and are now doing an employment verification, the there’s a good chance you’ll get the unit. If they were going to disapprove you based upon your credit profile, there would be no need to continue with the employment verification. At least that would make sense to me.

William asks…

I pulled my ex-wifes credit report and on the last page I saw my?

10 year old daughters named. Next to her named it said employment. Under that it had the named of a business, then it said homemaker. My ex has about 150,000 in debt and about 100,000 is bad debt. She also has 5 judgements. We also have a 8 year old son. Should I be concerned. None of my children are listed on my credit report. Can I run a credit check on my 10 year old?

John answers:

I would send a letter to the credit reporting agencies
requesting an investigation or call the creditor that is listed
with your daughters name on it. And yes I would definitely
run your daughters report. Sound likes your ex-wife is up
to something illegal !!!!! And if you find out she used your
daughters name for any credit, you can use that against
her and get custody. She is jeopardizing her daughter’s
future
